Educator Workshops: Designed for elementary school settings. Please use the following descriptions as a basic guide. All workshops are two (2) hours in length. Maximum of 10 participants. Inquire for pricing packages.
Six Steps to a School Garden
In this workshop, we focus on the initial steps to creating a school garden. The first hour is used to go over our six basic needs every garden should have before breaking ground: support, site selection, staffing, students, structure, and sustainability. The second hour functions as a design studio for participants to map and plan their gardens. Workshop participants will leave with planning materials and resources to begin their own school gardens! Best suited to school teams of teachers, administrators, and parents/community members interested in developing a school garden at their site.
Creatively Funding Your Youth Garden!
The focus of this workshop is how to support and finance your school garden or outdoor classroom. We share the ways we have pulled together funding for The Learning Patch at Broadmor Elementary School and some common sources of funding for school gardening programs. We also discuss and brainstorm ways to partner with community and state organizations to grow your program. The last 30 minutes will focus on basic grant writing methodologies and tips. Workshop participants will leave with resources and contacts to put to use for funding their garden programs. This workshop is geared toward school garden coordinators and managers, as well as school administrators looking to expand their garden and nutrition programs.
Our Top Ten! Lessons for a School Garden
Get a hands-on glimpse into some of our favorite lessons to teach from a school garden. Workshop participants will participate fully in one lesson as we share our basic strategies and structures for teaching outdoors. We will then discuss the experience and explore some of the ways we use the school garden to facilitate learning. Each workshop participant will receive a ten lesson curriculum packet and a “Teacher's Garden Kit” containing some basic investigative tools for use in the school garden. *This workshop can be geared toward Pre-K, Elementary, or Middle School teachers.
